Itinerary
Your journey begins at Islamabad International Airport, where a friendly Broad Peak Adventures representative will welcome you and transfer you to a comfortable hotel in the heart of the capital. Spend the day settling in, relaxing, and preparing for the adventure ahead. If time allows, take a short walk near the hotel to experience the vibrant energy of Islamabad. In the evening, meet your guide for a brief orientation session, covering the itinerary, safety tips, and travel advice for Pakistan's northern regions.
After an early breakfast, set off on a scenic drive along the iconic Karakoram Highway (KKH), often called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World.' As you leave Islamabad, the landscape transforms into rugged mountains and lush valleys. Stop at the Shatial rock carvings, ancient petroglyphs dating back thousands of years, showcasing Buddhist and pre-Islamic heritage. These intricate carvings offer a window into the region's historical significance as a cultural crossroads. Continue to Chilas, a quaint town along the Indus River.
Enjoy breakfast before continuing along the Karakoram Highway to Karimabad, the cultural hub of Hunza Valley. En route, stop at the mountain range junction point, where the Himalaya, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush ranges meet, creating a stunning panorama. This is an ideal spot for photography and to appreciate the region's geological wonders. Upon reaching Karimabad, check into a charming boutique hotel with breathtaking views of Rakaposhi Peak and surrounding mountains.
Dive into the rich history and natural beauty of Hunza Valley. Begin with a guided tour of Baltit Fort, a 700-year-old architectural gem overlooking Karimabad. Learn about its history as the residence of Hunza's rulers and its restoration by the Aga Khan Trust. Next, explore Altit Fort, one of the region's oldest forts, featuring panoramic views and a beautifully preserved garden. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely trek along the Barbar water channel, a traditional irrigation system that supports Hunza's lush orchards.
After breakfast, climb aboard a 4×4 jeep for an exciting ride to Hopper Valley, a remote region known for its dramatic glaciers and towering peaks. The journey takes you through winding trails and picturesque villages, offering glimpses of rural life in Hunza. Check into a simple yet comfortable lodge in Hopper Village upon arrival. Spend the afternoon exploring the village, meeting locals, and learning about their unique traditions. The serene setting and stunning views of Batura Muztagh and Hopper Glacier make this a perfect introduction to the wilder side of northern Pakistan.
Put on your hiking boots for the first day of your Rush Lake trek. After a hearty breakfast, trek from Hopper Valley to Barpo Giram Campsite. The trail winds through alpine meadows, past clear streams, and offers breathtaking views of Ultar Sar, Batura, and other towering peaks. Your experienced Broad Peak Adventures guide will share insights about the region's flora, fauna, and geological features. Set up camp at Barpo Giram, a picturesque site surrounded by rugged peaks. Enjoy a warm meal prepared by the camp crew and spend the evening stargazing under the clear mountain skies.
Today's trek takes you across the majestic Barpu Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the Karakoram range. The trail involves navigating rocky moraines and icy paths, offering a thrilling challenge for adventure enthusiasts. Your guide will ensure safe passage, providing tips for glacier walking. The views of snow-clad peaks and vast glacial expanses are truly spectacular. Arrive at Brikchour Campsite, a serene spot with panoramic vistas. Relax, enjoy a hot meal, and soak in the tranquility of this remote wilderness.
Today is the highlight of your trekking adventure as you ascend to Rush Lake, one of the highest alpine lakes in the world at 4,694 meters. The steep climb is challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking views of Spantik Peak, Malubiting, and the Hunza Valley below. Upon reaching Rush Lake, take time to marvel at its crystal-clear waters and serene beauty, a true gem of the Karakoram. After enjoying the views, descend slightly to Chiden Haral Campsite for the night. Celebrate your achievement with a warm meal and stories around the campfire.
Enjoy a leisurely morning at Rush Lake, perfect for photography, reflection, or simply soaking in the serene surroundings. After lunch, begin your descent to Gutons, a small village with traditional stone houses and terraced fields. The downhill trek is easier, allowing you to enjoy the changing landscapes and interact with locals along the way. Check into a basic guesthouse or set up camp in Gutons, depending on availability. Spend the evening relaxing and reflecting on your trekking journey.
After breakfast, trek back to Hopper Village, completing your Rush Lake adventure. The short trek offers final views of the Hopper Glacier and surrounding peaks. From Hopper, board a jeep and drive to Gulmit, a charming village in Upper Hunza. En route, stop at the turquoise Attabad Lake, formed by a landslide in 2010. Take a boat ride (optional) or enjoy the stunning views of this natural wonder. Check into a comfortable guesthouse in Gulmit and spend the evening exploring the village's traditional architecture and warm hospitality.
